*Physical Education At Fortuna High

I interviewed Katherine Lynch, one of 5 physical education teachers at Fortuna Union High School. She teaches two sections of PE1, Fitness & Flexibility, Advanced Conditioning for Girls, and Sports in American History. She always enjoyed sports and participated in a variety of them during her youth. Lynch said “The progression to becoming a physical education teacher came naturally. I first realized it would be a fun profession when I began coaching while I was attending college. Although I don't think I fully recognized it at the time, I was greatly influenced by many of the teachers and coaches I had during the course of my education.” Without realizing it Ms.Lynch had a path set in physical education. She enjoyed it herself and as a teacher she can now set other kids on to the same path as she went by motivating and inspiring them all.

On her free time she enjoys exercising. Lynch says she likes being active and the feeling of accomplishment after a good workout keeps her motivated. She said she enjoys the social aspect that comes from exercising with friends especially when she hikes or kayaks. I must agree with her because i remember in my years of taking PE after running a  mile i would feel proud of finishing it. I may have not been the fastest but i never gave up. If you want to stay motivated like me and many others Ms.Lynch says it's important to select physical activities that you enjoy doing so you don't give up. She says “many people also benefit from setting goals. Motivation is better maintained as you reach different benchmarks in the goals you set for yourself.” Another strategy that works well for some people is to have a workout partner. Working with a friend can provide encouragement, keep you accountable, and provide socialization throughout the process.

A main part of exercise means eating the right foods to keep you energized. “maintaining a good nutrition is essential to one's health. If you want to see optimal benefits from your exercise you must fuel your body with the appropriate nutrients. Eating a well balanced diet and staying hydrated will also help increase your energy levels.” This means drink plenty of water before,during, and after your workout so you don't dehydrate.

I asked her how often an average person should exercise and she said it is beneficial to do some physical activity everyday if possible. If you are doing resistance/strength training she believes it is good to work all major muscle groups at least twice a week. There is also aerobic training that you could do at least three times a week. She says that is good to identify your training goals and then structure a workout routine to meet any goals you want to reach. If anyone ever wants help Ms.Lynch is always happy to help set up a workout for you. She finds it rewarding to see people create a healthy lifestyle.

*Obesity Has Been Increasing

In the article “Obesity Rates Fall In Four States” by Maggie Fox she talks about obesity and how the percentage rates have somewhat decreased in the past years but have also risen among certain groups. In Minnesota, Montana, New York and Ohio, the rates of obesity have decreased in the last year but Maggie says in the age group of 12 to 19 year old, the rates have started increasing and they say that at least 40 percent of high school students drink soda everyday.

This has a huge impact on them because sodas are high in sugar. The states should start taxing sodas or raising the prices because this is making kids health go down. They should have more water around, so kids can drink water not soda. It's so bad that these people are gaining weight at such a young age because as they grow they will struggle more with losing weight and if they don't lose weight as they are older there will be a higher risk for them getting heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. So by them drinking soda this early they are putting their life on the path of a miserable death.

Maggie found evidence that if a person weighs 149 and is 5’5 with BMI (body mass index) of 24 their health is perfect but as soon as their BMI hits 25 they are considered overweight and if they weigh 180 pounds with a BMI of 30 they are considered obese. The numbers are very close to one another so to stay in the “healthy zone” you would have to carefully watch what you eat on a daily basis. This would mean cutting off most if not all sugary and greasy foods that are your everyday meals to stay in the perfect healthy zone.

Brothers Conjoined at Head Now Separated

There is two toddlers Anias and Jadon McDonald they are currently two years old and were born conjoined of the head and are going through surgery today October 13 2016. This birth is very rare the chances are 1 in a million. There mother was saying how she almost doesn't want to separate them because god sent them to her the way they are for a reason. The only reason she went ahead with the surgery is because if they didn't do it there was a higher risk that they wouldn't survive living after the age of two. One third die within 24 hours of their birth, and about 80% of twins joined at the head die of medical complications by the age of 2 if not separated and she didn't want that risk. Although there is risks in surgery she decided to take that path instead. In the operating room there was more than 20 people in the room it consisted of surgeons, doctors, nurses, staff. The surgery took almost 17 hours and they were safely separated. This surgery was the 59th craniopagus separation surgery in the world since 1952. When getting into the brain for surgery they had to be very careful because there is lots of blood vessels which are very fragile and if they cut them they would bleed out so they had to be super careful when it came to separating them. Both of the children made it out safely and there parents were so happy to be able to see them again after waiting all that time full of anxiety not knowing what would happen.

Self Selected Response On Zika

If you have not heard of Zika it is a virus that people can get when bit by a mosquito. It is also sexually transmitted so it's important people are safe. One in five cases show symptoms which is not good because it can get spread quickly that way.It can also be very hard to track down given that no one really shows symptoms. It's good that they have finally invested money into this problem because there is way too many infants that are being born with defects. It affects their brain development which is not good at all. The worst part of all this is these babies that are born with their brains undeveloped either die right after birth or those who stay alive have to be under lots of care so they make sure everything stays well with them. With this money they are going to find a vaccine before it spreads any further.Hopefully they are able to find one because there has already been to many victims of this virus. Getting a vaccine to stop this can take time but it was time that they began this research because they have already let it get out of control. People are disappointed that it took the congress so long to respond to this problem. If they would have responded quicker it would be easy to keep it from spreading everywhere instead of just waiting for a case to show up then they decide to deal with it. The longer they wait the more chances there is that it will quickly keep spreading. There has been one-hundred thirty four homegrown cases in Florida alone. This has shown how unprepared we are for these type of outbreaks. We should be able to fix these problems quick instead of just turning away and then coming back later after it's a harder problem to fix.
